How do I understand myself better?

The value of an investment is summed up by how much the investor put into it. Interestingly, mankind are God’s biggest investment. We are His only creation that God invested Himself in because nothing could cost our price! Isn’t it amazing?

Sadly when value is unknown, abuse is inevitable.

I often hear people blame God, the government, society or even their parents for situations they find themselves in. Until you realize that God has vested in you more than enough power to even channel the course of your life, you’ll never reach your full potential. You’ll probably keep blaming others. It is very paramount to understand who you are!

The Importance Of Knowing Who You Are 😉

Any product not functioning to its capacity is rendered faulty. Likewise, when mankind is not fully expressed, it is a waste!

With the ever growing demands, challenges and pressures of life eventually one has to come at a crossroad where they have to do a self evaluation and ask ‘Who really am I?’

To one who doesn’t know their selves, these transitions in life might be a make or break.

1. Preventing Identity Crisis

The shifts in the seasons of life require you to maintain a constant in your identity. This helps to prevent, ‘identity crisis’.

what is identity crisis? An identity crisis is defined as a period of uncertainty or confusion in a person’s life. This crisis occurs when a person’s sense of identity becomes insecure and unstable.

Many have fallen trap of fighting unnecessary battles all because of identity crisis. They do not know who they are therefore are victims of circumstances.

2. Focus

One of the keys to understand yourself better is to focus. You have to focus on the Word of God! The Word of God gives us the clear anatomy of who we are in Christ.

Understanding what the Word says about you gives you a vivid path to your course. You have to stay on course. Know what and who is for you and stick with that.

Story-time…

A few years back, I was given a scholarship to study abroad in a certain country in a field that I knew I was not called to be in. Sounds like a great opportunity yeah? Well, I declined it. With the understanding of who I am and have been called to be, I immediately knew that opportunity was not for me.

Listen, not every opportunity is yours! As children of God, we are not freelancers.

Keys to understanding yourself better

Many have confined their identity based on their marital status, race , gender and career choice.

They’re not entirely wrong but that is a secondary level of description. Why do I say so?

Follow me

Those that only define themselves with the above mentioned still suffer depression, suicidal thoughts and other mental health issues caused by identity crisis.

You are too great to define yourself with gender, race, career choice or marital status. You are bigger than that!
You’ve probably weighed in and resonated with how medicine, society and relationships have labeled you.

The essence of your being is defined by who God says you are. Do you know who God says you are?

1. You are the temple of the Most High.

God gave you a body not only that your Spirit can live in the body and function on earth. It is so, that He can live in your body through His Spirit. You are God’s tabernacle.

But you are God’s chosen treasure —priests who are kings, a spiritual “nation” set apart as God’s devoted ones. He called you out of darkness to experience his marvelous light, and now he claims you as his very own. He did this so that you would broadcast his glorious wonders throughout the world.
1 Peter 2:9 TPT

2.You are a Spirit man

The life in you has no color, gender or career.

Your body also houses your Spirit and your Spirit being the greater aspect of your identity than physical nature. Our physical nature is so we could relate to this present World. Your Spirit man precedes your physical man. Allow your Spirit man to dominate you. Whatever you feed your Spirit manifests in the physical. Therefore, more than you take care of your physical body, give great attention to your Spirit man.

3.You are not of this World

John 15 vs 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.

It is quite interesting how we have valued knowing our roots, tribes and totem whereas it is not so with our Spirit man. As a Spirit man, ever wondered whose seed you are of? Galatians 3 vs 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise. Isn’t this wonderful? We are not of this World! We are Christ’s very own. Therefore we are superior and we reign over circumstances because in us lives Jesus Christ who overcame even death itself.

By so doing you’re not carried by every wind of doctrine that the enemy might try to use against you.

We know there more than a million choices to make in life but when you know who God says you are there’s only choice.

4. You were bought with a price!

The Holy Spirit lives in you.

Never betray your worth for anything because Jesus Christ died for you! The Lord Himself! Nothing could cost our salvation but Christ Himself! It doesn’t matter what you’ve done, Jesus Christ loves you enough that He died for you!

5. You are perfect!

Most people spend their lives trying to acquire what they think God forgot to give them. This includes, race, family, your height etc. It doesn’t matter how you look like or where you come from, you’re perfect! You’re a complete package, nothing missing and you are ready to walk in the preordained pathways God has prepared for you. Oh how beautiful is that!

6.You are not what happened to you!

You are more than what society, medicine or even family has said about you. I love what Apostle Paul said in Philippians 3:13 -14 But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. You are not what happened to you! The only time you reflect on the past is when you are grateful unto the Lord. Practice the Word of God in every circumstance and you’ll come out victorious.

7.Kings do not beg!

Never say that you had no option or compromise your identity for anything.

Romans 8

16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

As a child of God in Jesus Christ, you have title deeds to our inheritance.

In closing…

Though we experience every kind of pressure, we’re not crushed. At times we don’t know what to do, but quitting is not an option. We are persecuted by others, but God has not forsaken us. We may be knocked down, but not out.
2 Corinthians 4:8‭-‬9 TPT

Everyday of our lives is accompanied by choices and decisions. How then do you know what and what not to choose? Therefore know, understand and establish God’s Word upon your life concerning you! We can’t always determine the challenges that come our way but we can determine the outcome when we know who we are. No matter how you see yourself, once you decide to follow Jesus, He changes everything. Make that commitment today!
